Couples Counselling Sydney

Support for couples feeling distant, stuck, or caught in painful patterns

You may care deeply about each other and still keep ending up in the same painful place. Couples counselling can help you understand how that happens and what each of you needs when connection feels uncertain.

Reasons couples seek counselling

When the relationship no longer feels easy to reach

The issue may be obvious, or it may be difficult to name. Sometimes couples arrive after a rupture. Others come because affection, safety or friendship has gradually been crowded out.

Recurring conflict

The subject changes, but the shape and emotional ending of the argument feel familiar.

Emotional distance

You function together, yet warmth, vulnerability or a sense of being known has faded.

Trust and repair

A breach of trust, secrecy or accumulated hurt continues to live between you.

Parenting pressure

Exhaustion, competing approaches and uneven responsibilities have made you feel more like opponents.

Intimacy and closeness

Physical or emotional intimacy has become difficult, pressured, infrequent or hard to discuss.

Relationship uncertainty

One or both of you is unsure what you want, or whether the relationship can continue as it is.

How Relationship Cycles Develop

The argument is rarely only about the argument

When connection feels threatened, each person’s nervous system looks for protection. One partner may pursue, protest or press for reassurance. The other may explain, defend, shut down or need space. Each response makes sense from the inside, but can intensify the other person’s alarm.

Before long, both partners are responding to the cycle as much as to each other. Naming that pattern creates a different question: not “Who started it?” but “What happens to us here?

HOW I WORK

Making room for what sits underneath

My couples work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment theory. In plain language, this means paying attention to the bond between you, the moments it feels threatened, and the protective reactions that follow.

We slow interactions down enough to notice the sequence: what was felt, what meaning was made, how each person responded, and how the response landed. That may reveal fear beneath anger, helplessness beneath fixing, longing beneath protest, or overwhelm beneath withdrawal.

The aim is not to remove every disagreement. It is to help you recognise the pattern earlier and create more emotionally honest, safer ways of meeting each other.

What Counselling is Not

No courtroom. No predetermined verdict.

Couples counselling is not about choosing the more reasonable partner or making one person responsible for everything that has gone wrong.

01

It is not a contest over whose account wins.

02

It does not force reconciliation.

03

It does not ignore accountability or emotional safety.

04

It asks what the pattern protects, costs, and makes difficult between you.

Uncertainty is not a failure of counselling. It can be the honest place where the work needs to begin.

Considering separation

If you are unsure whether to stay

You do not need to arrive equally committed or certain. One person may want to repair the relationship while the other feels exhausted, ambivalent or already partly gone.

Counselling cannot guarantee that a relationship will continue. It can offer a steadier place to understand what has happened, what remains possible, and what each person needs in order to make informed decisions with greater clarity and care.

Your First Session

Beginning with the story between you

A first couples session usually involves both partners. There is room for each of you to explain what has brought you to counselling, what has been most difficult, and what you hope may change.

I will listen for the content of the problem and for what happens between you while it is being discussed. We may begin mapping the cycle, clarifying goals and identifying any immediate concerns about safety, substance use or instability that could affect how we proceed.

You will not be expected to solve the relationship in the first appointment.
